The 762 Club - LYNformation Bulletins

Aware that much development has been going on in the background, but little has been seen in public, and also that the pace of development is gradually increasing, the 762 Club has introduced this on-line update feature. This page, to be updated at the beginning of each month, will provide brief news snippets and images and general "Lynformation" on our progress. Please come back regularly for the latest update.

LYNformation Bulletin No.9: L&B Autumn Gala 2013 Photo Special!

Event news

The two major Gala events went very well for the 762 Club and we were very pleased to welcome both new and existing members of the 672 Club to view at first hand the progress that had been made over recent months.

Boiler News:

1.Lyn’s first visit to Woody Bay!

It was great to see the boiler attending its first Woody Bay Gala. When will she return next?? It was transported to Woody Bay from Andy Bennett’s yard and returned the following Monday. I know many people favourably commented on its construction and its size! Yes, it will be a big “little” engine.

2. Crinoline supports

Andy will continue to mark these off and has welded the first six in place. He has the material to make the crinoline and has been in discussion with Mike to simplify the assembly. All of the support lugs will be completed within the next week or two but none of the crinoline were fitted for the gala as the risk of damage during the transporting is not worth the risk. Andy has two weeks holiday booked soon, so he will pick up this job on his return.

3. Header

The header is now back from the machinists and very good it looks too! It now has been tacked together and will be sent away for stress relieving. As it is quite small, it can be done locally to Bennett’s boilers. Then, Andy can weld in the dividing piece and start to drill out the spaces for the elements. We have all of the ball joints and superheater ends. Once the header is finished, it will be fitted to the front tubeplate.

4. Superheater elements

A start will be made in assembling the superheater elements during October and they should all be installed by Christmas.

5. Boiler fittings

The first of the boiler fittings arrived in time for the Woody Bay Gala where the water gauge frames were on display. The safety valves had an 8-week lead time, so we expect them around the beginning of November.

6. Regulator

We know it will be a very tight fit to locate and assemble the regulator. A method of “attack” has been decided and once Andy returns from his holiday, he will attempt to fit the regulator. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

Engine news:

1. Saddle

This assembly was indeed delivered in time for Alan Keef’s open day and very fine it looked. A real statement of intent.

Also now completed is the support ring (in fact a rectangle) that goes between the saddle and the cylinder assembly. This still needs a final machining to skim off to the final surface, but this cannot be done till we have the cylinder assembly.

2. Smokebox door All finished and assembled as far as practical. The hinges have been welded on and all of the components made. This big and heavy assembly will now be stored until required for final assembly.

3. Chimney All of the chimney assembly bar the chimney saddle has been delivered and painted. The final part is being forged by Israel Newton and due to be delivered imminently. It looks very good and will also now be put into store. 4. Valve and Piston Glands We have the blanks cast and these will be machined during October. Also with these parts are the two valve gland housing stuffing boxes. This will finish all of the jobs on the Valves and Cylinders that Alan Keef can do until we get the cylinder block made.

5. Wheels

No further news on the wheel casting. Frustrating!

6. Design and drawing

We have now made or are having made practically everything that has been drawn and released for manufacture. We are waiting for the next batch of drawings to be released so that we can carry on cutting metal. The next batch of drawings will be the motion. The batting order will be:
  • Motion
  • Valve Gear
  • Axles
  • Sand Box
  • Reverser
