The 762 Club - LYNformation Bulletins

Aware that much development has been going on in the background, but little has been seen in public, and also that the pace of development is gradually increasing, the 762 Club introduced this on-line update feature in early 2013. This page, updated around once a month, will provide brief news snippets, images and general "Lynformation" on our progress. Please come back regularly for the latest updates.

LYNformation Bulletin No.11: December 2013

1. Pony Truck Wheel casting

Hidden on the pallet, well wrapped up are the four pony truck wheel castings. These are a massive step forward and VERY heavy.

The wheels have been sent to Alan Keef's works for safekeeping and will eventually be sent back to Peak castings for machining. We need to wait a while for the design of the pony truck assembly to be fully completed and drawn. This is unlikely to be completed before the Spring, hence the need to safely store the wheel castings. Still, it is an exciting development!

2. Valve and Piston Glands

Here are the final items from the Cylinders and Valves that we can have made at the moment. They are very lovely valve and piston glands and these are the final part of the raft of orders given to Alan Keef Ltd. in the spring and summer relating the cylinder assembly.

3. Aussie Whistle

With great thanks to Emile Badawy of the "Puffing Billy Railway" in Melbourne, Australia who provided the castings free of charge, we now have an authentic Baldwin narrow gauge whistle. As far as we can tell, this is the type of whistle that the original "LYN" would have been supplied with.

It is a very handsome piece. It will now be taken to Mike Nelson who will model it and make sure the assembly drawings are correct. With luck, it will be displayed at the next L&B Gala on 10th and 11th May 2014.

4. Drawings and parts to be released for Manufacture

The end is slowly coming in sight, and we are tantalisingly close to reaching the point when we can look towards building the frames.

The latest "batting order" has been agreed to be:

5. Drivers Vacuum Brake valve

Here is another very significant component. Featured as November's "Component of the Month", sadly it did not attract any bidders, but the 762 Club has bought it from reserves as it is vital for the control of the train vacuum system.

It looks great and is very tidy but we will get it tested before we fit it to “LYN”.

6. Vacuum Duplex Gauge

Please have a look at December's “Component of the Month“ section on the sponsorship page.

We have a need to purchase one and they do sometimes come up at Railwayana meets. We are looking to have the funds available to be able to bid for one. It is an important and very visible item, so we hope we can attract a sponsor for it.

7. Cylinder assembly

Readers will note that we have had some fun and games trying to finalise the cylinder block design. We have also had to make some compromises with the design to reduce the unexpectedly high cost we have been quoted. I am pleased to say that we are very nearly there, and have one final visit planned for 19th December to finalise our order. I hope by the time you read “Lynformation 12”, we will have this all tidied up and I will be able to report the agreed delivery date.

8. Driving Wheel Machining

I had hoped to show photographs of our driving wheels but sadly, that has not proved possible yet.

Our foundry has discovered that the machine they had in mind to do the machining was not big enough to handle our wheels. Their alternative lathe was not accurate enough and so they have had to put this job out to complete. I am told that they are “on it now”, but have no firm date for delivery to Ross-on-Wye.

9. Commercial Sponsorship

This is growing nicely and although I cannot announce detailed responses, we should be able to have significant pieces made for us.

I can announce that in principle, manufacture of the sand boxes has been promised. More details as we have them.

10. Boiler Drawing

As we get to the end of the process of making the boiler, I thought readers might be interested to see the revised boiler drawing that shows the split dome which was necessary to fit the regulator. It is a fantastic drawing and is practically complete now. Huge praise needs to go to Mike Nelson for his meticulous work in producing our drawings.

11. General Arrangement Drawing

Here is the latest (but not yet complete) GA drawing. As more items are either drawn or agreed, it will become more complete and will be repeat here from time to time.
