The 762 Club - LYNformation Bulletins

Aware that much development has been going on in the background, but little has been seen in public, and also that the pace of development is gradually increasing, the 762 Club introduced this on-line update feature in early 2013. This page, updated around once a month, will provide brief news snippets, images and general "Lynformation" on our progress. Please come back regularly for the latest updates.

LYNformation Bulletin No.31: August

Dear All,

Welcome to LYNformation 31.

This month's LYNformation is shorter than normal, reflecting a lull in activity due to holidays, and some difficult issues to resolve.

As I reported last month, the overall project has been delayed by at least six months, and it will also result in quite a large extra bill but read on to find out why.

1. Frames

As reported last month, the frames were delivered from Babcocks in late June, but the two main side frames were found to be incorrectly cut. There were several issues with the 80mm thick plate and the two sides were different sizes. On top of that, several holes had been incorrectly or poorly drilled and the tolerances were not what we were expecting.

The solution was to either correct the errors, or start again on new side plates. At least the majority of the other profiles and frame plates supplied by Babcocks can be used.

No decision has been made on this difficult area yet, but whatever happens, it will cost us an extra 10-15,000. Ouch!

2. Steam Brake Cylinders

I am pleased to say that the two cylinders have been delivered from the Ffestiniog Railway. They are shown here:

3. Ejector

I am also pleased to include two photographs of the ejector made for us, again, by the Ffestiniog Railway.

4. Eccentric Straps

The news from Whitelands is that they have fully completed the sheaves and the three straps have been 'let down' and will be completed in August. The fourth strap, the one that broke, will be started this month, with the material for it being delivered to Whitelands this week. If all goes well, the whole lot will be ready for shipping to Alan Keef in the last week of August when other parts are shipped from D;evon. Some extra costs have been incurred, however, to cover new material for the strap that broke and extra heat treatment.

5. Cylinders

The material for the new valve liner has been ordered and should be delivered in early August. All of the valve and cylinder covers have been delivered to Frost's so that they can fit them to the cylinders and use them as blanking plates when the testing of the cylinders commences. Apart for the liner, the only other work needed is to machine the cylinder drain cock threads and then test the whole assembly. Then, the whole lot goes to another firm to hone the bores and finally, they get delivered to Alan Keefs.

6. Brake rigging and handbrake

I had hoped that the drawings for these areas could have been released so that we can start offering them as items to be sponsored, but alas, holidays have got in the way, so it will be this month that we can start in earnest. However, we do have one part ready which has been promoted as August's Component of the Month.

7. Pony Truck

Alan Keef and Sons have started the pony trucks and are now beginning to collect together the profiles and axle box castings ready for machining. The likely cost for both pony trucks is 22,000 each, so it is a major spend and is expected to take 3 months.

8. Alan Keef Open Day

It has been tentatively suggested that Saturday morning 14th November will be the best day to invite members to see progress at AKL. Once we are sure that the frame will be ready to show people, then we will firm up on the date.

Well, that is about all for this month. I hope to be able to report more progress next month.

Peter
