Aware that much development has been going on in the background, but little has been seen in public, and also that the pace of development is gradually increasing, the 762 Club introduced this on-line update feature in early 2013. This page, updated around once a month, will provide brief news snippets, images and general "Lynformation" on our progress. Please come back regularly for the latest updates.

Hello 762 Supporters, and welcome to LYNformation 39.
This month has seen good progress and several significant orders placed, so without further ado, off we go!
1. Eccentrics Trial assembled
Whilst we took delivery of the eccentric sheaves and straps some months ago, they had not been assembled onto the driving axle. Whilst we were very confident that the parts would be machined expertly by Whiteland Engineering, we did have some worries about how easily the assembly with the roller bearings would go together. So in December, a trial assembly took place on the bench to see how it would all work. We need not have feared as the assembly was easier than anticipated and a method of assembly was worked out when we actually came to do the final assembly on the driving axle.
These photographs (courtesy of 762 Club Member Geoff Hill) show how the assembly on the bench fitted together, and how they needed to be assembled onto the driving axle.
2. Final Batch of Bearings Purchased
As readers will know, there are a lot of roller bearings incorporated into LYN. Our design team have selected SKF as our prime supplier and we have purchased very competitively SKF bearings from approved distributors. The final batch has just arrived and these go into the rear pony truck control assembly as well as the brake stand.
These photographs show the bearings on arrival at AKL.
3. Eccentrics fitted!
We now turn the clock forward to March, and here are a set of photographs showing the final assembly of the eccentric sheaves fitted on to the drive axle and then the eccentric straps fitted onto the eccentric sheaves.
The photographs show three of the four eccentrics fitted and the fourth sheave attached to the drive axle just waiting for the pre-assembled strap to go on. This has now been finished and all looks well. Patrick Keef was impressed with just the right amount of slack in the arrangement that will be necessary once the eccentric straps are fitted to the inside motion. It looks good!
4. Hand Brake Chassis
This big lump was delivered on the 16th March from the works of Adam Dalgleish. Adam is doing quite a lot of work for me on other engine projects that I am involved with. I am restoring an Ex-USATC S 160 class 2-8-0 locomotive, number 2253, and the engine and boiler are being done at Stockton. If you are interested, this project has a Facebook page of its own: Friends of 2253. Additionally, Adam is making a new boiler for my 2' gauge Beyer Garratt number 130 which will be destined for the Welsh Highland Railway. Again, it has its own Facebook page: Friends of 130. Check them out.
Anyway, Adam was persuaded to contribute this assembly for LYN and gave it to his apprentices to make. He delivered it whilst visiting AKL.
Incidentally, for those of you who are on Facebook, LYN also has a community page: The762Club and there is also a public group: 762Group - feel free to visit there too!
We have now asked AKL to quote for the cost of assembling the parts once we have all of items made.
5. Horn Components
We gave AKL an order some weeks ago to make all of the parts to make the horn guides, wedges and various components so that we can assemble the wheel sets onto the frames. This order is scheduled to be completed either by the end of March or very early in April. Illustrated are some of the precision parts needed for this key part.
6. Brake Gear and components for the brake stand
Our friend Nigel Heath has been busy making a whole raft of different components for the brake gear and brake stand. On 24th March, I raised a final order for the last six parts for the brake stand and delivered the raw material to Nigel. He expects to complete these by the end of April and once he has completed this order, we will have all of the parts for the brake stand. As previously mentioned, we have asked AKL to quote for putting it all together, and as long as the price is acceptable, then we will raise that order straight away. The reason is partly to get it done and out of the way, as well as trying to make sure that we do not lose any parts whilst other activities are going on. It will also be put onto the frames as soon as the LYN is wheeled.
I had a good and productive meeting with Patrick Keef during the month, when we sketched out a rough timetable from now until 17th September, which is the Alan Keef Open Day, and the next BIG event for the 762 Club. We will be inviting all members, friends and supporters to visit AKL on that day and it has been agreed that LYN will then be:
Fitted with its driving wheels
Fitted with its pony trucks
A fully assembled rolling chassis
The saddle will be fitted.
The cylinders will be fitted.
The brake stand will be fitted.
Possibly the reverser stand will be fitted.
Possible some or all of the inside motion will be fitted.
There will also be one other 'Special item' in place (even if only temporarily). You will have to come to see what it is!!
8. Orders placed
Finally, we have placed an order for the spring assembly: A3-LYN-070. This is all of the profiles and pins together with the straps and clamps that hold the springs in position. As we have four springs, we need four assemblies and we have placed the order with Adam Dalgleish for these. He took delivery of the springs themselves at the same time as he delivered the hand brake chassis and these items will be delivered back to us by the middle of June.
This was quite an event for me personally as it was the last significant order needed for LYN. Whilst we have many items being made at the moment, apart from some parts that we cannot order until we have the boiler in position in the frames, there is NOTHING left to order! So when you look at the sponsorship page, the list is practically all there is or will be. So hurry now to reserve the final parts for LYN!
More next month,
