The 762 Club - LYNformation Bulletins

Aware that much development has been going on in the background, but little has been seen in public, and also that the pace of development is gradually increasing, the 762 Club introduced this on-line update feature in early 2013. This page, updated around once a month, will provide brief news snippets, images and general "Lynformation" on our progress. Please come back regularly for the latest updates.

LYNformation Bulletin No.52: April 2017

As promised, here is April's second LYNformation, packed with news and developments:

1. Outside Motion

The first three images show the outside motion being assembled. The piston rods are fitted to the pistons and the slide bars and cross heads assembled. The measurements have been carefully taken to establish the bump stops. Both right and left sides have been fixed.

2. Ashpan

With the boiler back in place (for the penultimate time), much activity has taken place around those jobs that need the boiler in position. One of the key jobs has been the fitting of the ashpan. This was successfully completed, and all that remains for the ashpan assembly to be competed is the door linkage.

3. Main Brake Shaft

This is also in place so that the exact measurements and alterations to the brake gear can be made. However, it will also need to be taken out again.

4. Steam Brake Cylinders

Both sides have been fitted and most of the linkage complete. Just a few more pins and bushes to fit.

5. GPCS Pipework

Master welder Tony Conway has been busy doing the fabrication and welding of the gas producer combustion system pipework. As much as possible has been fitted and assembled. Just a few tweaks to go.

6. Valve rods

These have been delivered and are ready to be assembled with the heads. We are anxiously waiting for the valve and piston rings which are well overdue. As soon as they arrive, we can complete the valve assembly.

7. Little Ends

> These are also now finished and ready for fitting.

8. Connecting Rods

In order to do all of the trial assemblies and take accurate measurements, we have made dummy bearings. These are fitted and allow us to trial fit the whole of the outside motion. We only want to fit the roller bearings once!

9. Brake Stand Position

Not a great image, but we have trialled where the brake stand fits to make sure it aligns with the brake arm. With a tiny bit of shimming, it will fit perfectly.

10. Cab Roof

The return curves have been neatly completed, and the cab roof looks brilliant. It will be painted, but not finally secured until it is back at AKL.

11. Cab Hatch

The main chassis for the hatch and the hatch itself are well on the way to completion. Again, the hatch will not be cut out until it gets back to Ross.

12. Smokebox Assembly

Richard has been busy in the smokebox and has successfully trialled the chimney, blast pipe and spark arrestor. They all now fit well. They will be taken out in order that Tony Conway can start manufacturing the main steam pipes soon.

13. Chimney

This has now been fully aligned. It will need to come off one final time, but it is a five-minute job to fix it permanently.

14. Boiler cladding

You will recall from an earlier LYNformation that two of the boiler cladding sheets were incorrectly made. We now have the replacements in stock and ready to fit.

15. Smokebox Door and Dummy Rivets

Richard was just finishing off the drilling of the holes for the dummy rivets, smokebox door hinges, and smokebox supports. All of these items will have been completed by the time you read this.

So there we are. A huge amount done, but still quite a lot to finish off. We will be taking on additional help for two days a week starting in May, and hope that we can have the members' first steaming day on Saturday 8th July 2017. LYN will not be painted at this stage but will be steam-tested and run on Alan Keef's short stretch of track. This date will be confirmed in the coming weeks, but we are all focussed on getting this done and meeting this deadline.

Peter
